1. Definition of Narrative Text
Narrative text is a text that tells a series of events sequentially and are connected to one another. This type of text has an imaginative nature or an imaginary story that aims to entertain the reader.
Generally, narrative text presents a story with problems that can trigger conflict to attract readers' interest. Then, at the end the writer will close it with a happy or sad ending.
2. Characteristics of Narrative Text
Here are some features of narrative text:
- Generally uses pronouns like I, we, she, and he because they only focus on one character and are usually individual
- Narrative texts are generally composed with Past Tense sentences, such as Simple Past Tense, Past Continuous, and others
- Some narrative texts usually use dialogue to enhance the reader's imagination.
3. Types of Narrative Text
Narrative text has several types, namely:
- Folklore
Folklore or folklore is a story handed down from ancestors to become a tradition, both oral and semi-oral. In Indonesia, there are several well-known folktales, one of which is Bawang Merah Bawang Putih.
- Fables
Fables are stories about animals that seem to behave like humans, one example is the story of Si Kancil and the Crocodile. Fable is a type of narrative text that contains a lot of moral messages.
- Myth
Myth or myth in English is a story set in the past. In general, these myths tell stories about gods or heroes that contain interpretations of the origins of the universe.
- Legend
Legend or legend is an example of narrative text in the form of ancient folklore. Legends usually tell the origins or historical events or places.
An example of a well-known legend is the story of Lake Toba and the story of Mount Tangkuban Perahu.
- Fairy tales
A fairy tale or what is called a fairytale in English is a story that is usually read to children at bedtime. A fairy tale has the meaning of a magical story that doesn't really happen or is just a fantasy.
- Romance Stories
The next example of narrative text is a romance story or what is called romance/love story in English. As the name implies, romance stories are a type of narrative text that focuses on love stories.
Examples of romance stories that are quite famous in the world are the stories of Romeo and Juliet and the story of Layla Majnun.
- Mystery Stories
Mystery story is a type of narrative text in the form of mystery stories or stories that are not known for certain.
- Horror Stories
Horror stories are a type of narrative text which contains scary stories about ghosts and other invisible creatures.
- Adventure Stories
Adventure stories or in English are called adventure stories is a type of narrative text that contains stories about interesting and challenging adventures. One example of an adventure story is Sinbad and Alibaba.
- Historical Stories
The next type of narrative text is historical narrative or historical narrative. These historical stories usually contain stories or facts about past events that have historical value.
One example of the type of narrative text historical review which is quite well-known in Indonesia is the Diponegoro War.
4. Narrative text structure
- Orientation
Is the opening part of a narrative text story. This section introduces the characters in the story as well as the background of the story which includes the setting of place, time, atmosphere, and social conditions (setting).
- Complications
This section contains the problems that occur in a story. In more detail, the complication is further divided into 3 parts, namely:
Rising action: Problems begin to appear
Climax: The climax of the problem
Falling action: The tension of the problem begins to decrease, and begins to find a settlement point.
- Resolution
This section contains the completion or ending of a narrative text story. A story can be closed with a happy ending, a sad ending, or a cliffhanger.
- Re-orientation
The last part of the narrative text structure (narrative text) usually contains conclusions, moral values, or changes in character traits at the end of the story. This reorientation is optional because it doesn't always have to be present in a narrative text.
5. Grammar analysis in narrative text
Narrative text usually uses certain grammar or grammar as the characteristics of narrative text. What grammar is usually used in a narrative text?
- Use of past tense
The tenses or verb forms used in narrative text are past tense or verbs in the past. For example, the words "ate", "went", and "grew" are some verbs in the past tense. Yes, this happens because the story is usually something that has happened in the past. Therefore, when telling something that has happened, the verb used is the one that has the past tense.
- Use of adverbs of time
One of the characteristics of narrative text is the use of "adverb of time". It is used to clarify when the story takes place. That way, you can better understand the time setting of the story.
Generally, the adverb of time used is in the form of "once upon a time", "last year", "tonight", and many more. The use of adverbs of time is usually 'one package' with the use of adverbs of place such as "In a beautiful home", "In a land far far away", and so on.
- Use of noun phrases
Noun phrases are also grammar for narrative text that you can use. In a narrative text, you will probably find many noun phrases. For example, "charming prince", "handsome lad", and many more.
The use of noun phrases is used to clarify something, in order to help people who read this text be able to imagine how the situations and conditions that occur in the story in the narrative text.
- Use of direct dialogue
In narrative text, the use of dialogue or direct conversation is also often used. Usually, dialogue occurs between characters in the story. You will often encounter dialogues in the form of direct speech from the characters.
To make the story more lively, these dialogues are certainly needed. In addition, having dialogue makes it easier for readers of stories, fairy tales, or even fables made using narrative text to imagine the atmosphere and the relationships that occur between the characters.
- Using action verbs
The grammar rule that also applies to narrative text is the use of action verbs. Yes, the verbs used in narrative text are words that show that the subject is doing an action. For example, "He killed the woman in the forest," or "She walked out of the room with an angry face."
Of course the use of action verbs is very important, because their role in a story is of course very helpful for the writer to explain the plot of the story.
- Using a connecting sentence in the form of time (time conjunction)
The use of the time conjunction has a function as a timepiece regarding two events that take place simultaneously or sequentially. Time conjunctions try to make it easier for you to more easily understand the relationship between two events regarding the time of occurrence.
6. Examples of narrative text
The Legend of Toba Lake
In the past, there lived a young orphan farm in the northern part of the island of Sumatra. Syahdan, the young man made his life from farming and fishing. One day while he was fishing he got a fish which was so beautiful in golden brown. While he was holding it, the fish turned into a beautiful princess. The princess was a woman who was condemned for violating the prohibitions and it would turn into a kind of creature who first touched it. Because at that time the human touched it, then it turned into a princess.
Fascinated by her beauty, the young man asked her to be his wife. The application was accepted on condition that the young man was not allowed to tell the origin of the princess who came originally from fish. The young man agreed to this requirement. Having got married for a year, the couple got a boy but he had a bad habit that he never felt satisfied while he was eating. He ate all the food.
One day the boy ate all the food that should be given to his father. The young man then said angrily: "basically you are the offspring of fish!" That statement by itself unlocked the secrets of his wife and broke his promise.
Shortly afterwards, his wife and son magically disappeared. Suddenly in the land of their former footsteps went out the springs which were very heavy. The water flew from these springs continuously and the longer it happened the larger it would be. Finally, these springs became a vast lake. The lake is now called Toba Lake.
